Medicare Advantage

Need health coverage beyond Original Medicare? Medicare Advantage plans combine hospital, medical, and often prescription coverage - all under one plan.

Your Guide to Medicare Advantage Coverage

Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C) is an alternative to Original Medicare offered by Medicare-approved private insurers. These plans bundle hospital (Part A) and medical (Part B) coverage, and many also include prescription drugs (Part D). Some plans may add benefits like dental, vision, or hearing. If you’re eligible for Medicare, a Medicare Advantage plan lets you get coverage in one plan, with one card.

Medicare Advantage plans are provided by private insurers that contract with Medicare. You still have Medicare, but your benefits come through the plan rather than directly from the federal program. Most plans use provider networks, so you’ll usually need in-network doctors and hospitals for the lowest costs.

All plans include Part A (hospital) and Part B (medical), and most also include Part D prescription drugs. Some plans may offer extra benefits not covered by Original Medicare, such as dental, vision, hearing, or wellness programs. Availability depends on your plan and location.

To join, you must have both Part A and Part B and live in the plan’s service area. Most people enroll during the Annual Enrollment Period (October 15–December 7). Special Enrollment Periods may apply after certain life events, such as moving or losing other coverage.

Medicare Advantage and YOU

Medicare Advantage was designed with choice in mind. Where you live determines the plan types, carriers, and benefits available — giving you flexibility to find the plan that fits your needs.

  • Different plan types → Options may include HMOs, PPOs, PFFS plans, and SNPs, each with its own rules and features.

  • Variety of carriers → Multiple private insurance companies may offer Medicare Advantage plans in your area.

  • Coverage varies by location → Plan benefits and networks depend on where you live and which carriers serve your county.

I called and got connected right away. After a few questions, Hannah [licensed insurance agent] walked me through the different plans in my area. I didn’t realize there were so many choices! Having someone explain how the benefits would actually work for me made it a lot easier to make a decision, and I feel confident knowing I picked the right plan.

How to Choose a Medicare Advantage Plan

Choosing a Medicare Advantage plan depends on plan availability in your area and your personal preferences — like your health needs, budget, and any added benefits you value. Here are three steps to help you prepare before comparing options.

  1. Review your current coverage and costs.

Look at what you’re paying now for premiums, copays, prescriptions, and other regular expenses.

  2. Consider your health needs and must-haves.

Think about the doctors you want to keep, the prescriptions you take, and any services you expect to use in the coming year.

  3. Know your enrollment periods.

Most people can make changes during the Annual Enrollment Period (Oct 15–Dec 7). Special Enrollment Periods may apply if your situation changes, such as moving or losing other coverage.

When you’re ready, speaking with a licensed insurance agent can help you review your Medicare Advantage options and see which plans are available in your area.

Avoiding Medicare Advantage Scams

If you hear benefits that sound too good to be true, someone calls or messages you without your permission, you feel pressured to “act now,” or you’re asked for personal details without reason — those are red flags. Organizations and licensed agents who offer and market Medicare Advantage plans must follow strict rules.

Work with a credible, trusted resource who can help you review options safely.
